Election workers play an important role in ensuring the election runs smoothly on Election Day at voting locations.

Eligibility

To be eligible to become an election worker, you must meet all of the following conditions:

  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Have access to a personal email address that’s not shared with anyone else

Time commitment

Election Day

Election workers are expected to work on Election Day from 8:30 a.m. until you are dismissed by the location manager. Some positions may require you to pick up and drop off supplies and equipment before and after your work hours.

Training

All election workers must complete training sessions specific to their roles. Depending on your role, you may need to complete in-person training sessions, online training modules or review the assigned training manuals.

Election job descriptions

  • Hours of training:
    • 3 hours in-person training session
    • 1.5 hours online module
  • Compensation:
    • $381
    • The total compensation includes training and picking up and dropping off supplies.
  • Primary responsibilities:
      • Help set up laptops before polls open
      • Verify identification provided by voters
      • Use a computer application to strike voters’ names off the electronic voters’ list
      • Review and process Applications for Revision to the Voters List
      • Issue ballots to qualified voters
      • Ensure voting is smooth and ease
      • Make sure laws governing the election are followed
      • Reconcile ballot counts every hour
      • Perform duties assigned by the Elections Office, Vote Anywhere Supervisor or Location Manager
      • Complete all closing procedures required
      • Assist with packing up the laptops

  • Hours of training:
    • 3 hours in-person training
    • 2 hours equipment pick-up and drop-off if required
  • Compensation:
    • $371
    • The total compensation includes training and picking up and dropping off supplies.
  • Primary responsibilities:
    • Pick up vote tabulator and ballot box prior to By-election Day from the designated location
    • Help with polling location setup, opening and closing
    • Set up vote tabulator and ballot box
    • Feed marked ballots through a vote tabulator
    • Monitor the vote tabulator and ensure it operates properly throughout the day
    • Ensure results successfully transmit to Election Headquarters on Election night
    • Perform duties assigned by the Elections Office or Location Manager
    • Return election supplies to the Elections Headquarters after the polls close if required

This position requires you to have access to a vehicle in order to pick up and drop off election supplies.

  • Compensation:
    • $280
  • Primary responsibilities:
    • Help with polling location set up, opening and closing
    • Post all signage inside and outside of the polling location before the polls open
    • Serve as a greeter at the entrance to the polling location
    • Inform voters how to correctly mark their ballots
    • Make sure voters have a Voter Notification Card and ID
    • Direct voters to the Deputy Returning Officer
    • Help voters who need assistance
    • Perform duties assigned by the Elections Officer or Location Manager
    • Help close the polls
