Become an election worker

Eligibility

To be eligible to become an election worker, you must meet all of the following conditions:

  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Have access to a personal email address that’s not shared with anyone else

Time commitment

Election Day

  • Regular polling locations are open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Election workers at regular polling locations start at 7:30 a.m. until you are dismissed by the location manager.
  • Mandatory polling locations are open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (hospital, long-term care and nursing homes).
  • Election workers at mandatory locations start at 8:30 a.m. until dismissed by the Mandatory Supervising Deputy Returning Officer.

Training

Depending on the position, you will be required to:

  • Attend an in-person training session
  • Complete an online eLearning module through the worker portal
  • Sign off on policies and oaths online through the worker portal

Details of the Mandatory Supervising Deputy Returning Officer

  •  Training:
    • 3 hour in-person training session
  • Compensation:
    • $300
    • Includes training, supply pick-up and drop-off, working on Election Day
  • Primary responsibilities:
    • Facilitating voting in Hospitals, Long Term Care and Nursing Homes
    • Overall operation of the mandatory voting location
    • Ensuring that the voting location is properly set up
    • Ensuring that all rules and procedures are strictly followed
    • Acting as a liaison between the election workers and the Elections Office
    • Verifying identification provided by electors
    • Striking electors off of the voters’ list
    • Issuing ballots to eligible electors
    • Processing “Applications for Revision to the Voters’ List” in accordance with the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, and the procedures set out by the City Clerk
    • Completing forms neatly and accurately and administering oaths as required
    • Reconciling ballot counts every hour
    • Helping electors that require assistance
    • Performing closing procedures

This position requires you to have access to a vehicle in order to pick up and drop off election supplies.

Details of the Deputy Returning Officer

  •  Training:
    • 3 hour in-person training session
  • Compensation:
    • $390
    • Includes training and working on Election Day
  • Primary responsibilities:
    • Helping with the set-up of laptops prior to the polls opening
    • Verifying identification provided by electors
    • Striking electors off of the voters’ list
    • Issuing ballots to eligible electors
    • Using the Voterview computer application to strike electors off of the electronic voters’ list
    • Processing “Applications for Revision to the Voters’ List” in accordance with the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, and the procedures set out by the City Clerk
    • Completing forms neatly and accurately and administering oaths as required
    • Ensuring that voting is smooth and easy and that the laws governing the election are strictly followed
    • Reconciling ballot counts every hour
    • Helping electors that require assistance
    • Performing other duties as assigned by the Elections Office, Vote Anywhere Supervisor or Location Manager
    • Assisting with packing up laptops at the end of the day
    • Performing closing procedures

Details of the Operator

  •  Training:
    • 3 hour in-person training
  • Compensation:
    • $390
    • Includes training, supply pick-up and drop-off, working on Election Day
  • Primary responsibilities:
    • Assisting with voting location set up, opening and closing
    • Setting up and taking down the tabulator (weighs approximately 30 pounds) and ballot box
    • Ensuring the tabulator is operating properly throughout the day
    • Ensuring that all ballots are correctly fed through the tabulator
    • Helping electors that require assistance
    • Ensuring that results are successfully transmitted to Elections Headquarters on election night
    • Packing and returning tabulator to the election supply cabinet as per closing procedures
    • Performing other duties as assigned by the Elections Office or Location Manager

This position requires you to have access to a vehicle in order to pick up and drop off election supplies.

Details of the Information Officer

  •  No in-person training for this position
  •  Compensation:
    • $279
    • Includes training and working on Election Day
  • Primary responsibilities:
    • Assisting with voting location set up, opening and closing procedures
    • Posting directional signage inside and outside of the voting location prior to polls opening
    • Directing electors from the entrance of the building to the room where voting is taking place
    • Informing electors how to correctly mark their ballots
    • Directing electors to the Deputy Returning Officers
    • Helping electors that require assistance
    • Performing other duties as assigned by the Elections Office or Location Manager
