The candidate nomination period is open from May 1 at 8:30 a.m. to August 21 at 2 p.m.

Eligibility

To qualify as a candidate you must be:

A Canadian citizen

At least 18 years old

A resident in the City of Mississauga; or

A non-resident of Mississauga and you or your spouse owns or rents property in the City

You do not qualify to run as a candidate if you:

Are serving a sentence of imprisonment in a penal or correctional institution

Are a corporation

Are acting as executor or trustee or in any other representative capacity

Were convicted of the corrupt practice described in Municipal Elections Act, 1996, less than five years ago

Information session and workshops

Candidate information session

The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, along with the City, held an in-person candidate information session on March 24. It was open to anyone interested in running for office or learning more about the 2026 Mississauga Municipal Election.

The session was intended to provide prospective candidates with the information they need to understand the process and requirements to run. It also covered the Use of City Resources During an Election Campaign Corporate Policy.

How to register

If you are interested in running for Mayor, Ward/Regional Councillor or School Board Trustee, you must complete the following steps to become a registered candidate.

Complete the nomination package

You can download the complete nomination package or pick up hard copies from the Elections Office. Appointments to pick up hard copies start April 24 at 8:30 a.m. Book an appointment or call 905-615-3389.

Book an appointment to meet with an Election Official

Once you have completed your nomination package, you must file it with an Election Official. To do this, you must book an in-person appointment for the Election Official to validate your identification documents and ensure your nomination package is complete and acceptable. Appointments to file your nomination start May 1 at 8:30 a.m.

Pay the nomination fee

After the Election Official has validated your ID and nomination package at your appointment, you will need to pay the applicable nomination fee:

  • The nomination fee to run for Mayor is $200.
  • The nomination fee to run for Ward Councillor is $100.

You can pay the fee with a credit card, debit card, certified cheque or bank draft. Cash is not accepted.

Incomplete endorsements

If you are planning to run for Mayor or City Councillor, make sure you follow all requirements for the Endorsement of Nomination – Form 2:

  • Minimum 25 endorsements required but 30 recommended
  • Endorsees must fill in their own information
  • Each endorsement must include the name, residential address, municipality, province, postal code, signature and date of the endorsement
  • All information must be complete, accurate and legible
  • Candidates must not add or amend information and all corrections must be made and initialled by the endorsee

Incomplete or invalid endorsements will not be counted and may result in the nomination not being accepted. Candidates will be required to return at a later date and time with a complete package.

After you file your nomination

When your nomination process is complete, you will receive a receipt from an Election Official confirming your nomination package and fees have been processed.

Until you receive this confirmation, you may not:

  • Begin campaigning
  • Spend money to campaign
  • Ask for or accept contributions for your campaign
