Your Vote Matters! Mississauga Gears Up for 2022 Municipal Election

Mississauga is getting ready for the next municipal election, which will take place on Monday, October 24, 2022. Eligible voters will vote for Mayor, City/Regional Councillor and School Board Trustee.

“We are making voting in Mississauga easy and convenient. There will be numerous advance polling dates and the option to ‘Vote Anywhere’ which gives you the flexibility to cast your ballot at any advance voting location across the city,” said Diana Rusnov, Director, Legislative Services and City Clerk. “It also means that on Election Day, you can cast your ballot at any voting location in your ward.”

Eligible Voters
The Municipal Elections Act, 1996 sets the rules for municipal elections, including who is eligible to vote.

To cast a ballot in the upcoming 2022 municipal election, you must be:

• a Canadian citizen
• at least 18 years old
• a resident in the City of Mississauga or a non-resident of Mississauga and you or your spouse own or rent property in the City
• not otherwise prohibited under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 or by-law

To make sure your information is up-to-date, check the Voter’s List, managed by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC).

Eligible Candidates
The nomination period will open on Monday, May 2, 2022 and will close at 2 p.m. Friday, August 19, 2022.

To qualify to run, candidates must meet all of the following conditions:

• be a Canadian citizen
• be at least 18 years old
• be a resident in the City of Mississauga or a non-resident of Mississauga and you or your spouse own or rent property in the City
• you must not otherwise be prohibited from running under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 or by-law

Election Workers
The City will be hiring elections staff to work at voting locations during the election. Watch for more details in the spring and summer of 2022.

Election Day and Diwali
The municipal election is held every four years. The date of the election is set by the Government of Ontario.

This year’s Election Day falls on the first day of Diwali, one of the major religious festivals in Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism. Voters observing Diwali will be encouraged to vote early in one of the City’s many advance polling locations to be held in the first three weeks of October.
